He led the National League in fielding percentage six times and also hit .300 or better on seven occasions. As a manager, he twice piloted the Redbirds to the World Series. As a rookie in 1945 he led the league in stolen bases. He has worn a major league uniform as a player, coach, or manager for seven decades.
