Signed by John McGraw after pitching batting practice for the Giants at the age of 15,
Waite Hoyt went on to become the mainstay of six Yankees pennant winners in the 1920s. “Schoolboy”
pitched three games in the 1921 World Series against the Giants and allowed only two runs - both
unearned - over 27 innings, earning two of his six career World Series victories. The highly
intelligent and articulate right-hander ended his 21-year career in 1938, broadcasting games in
New York and Cincinnati for the next 28 seasons.
